Hoopfest!

2026 Hoopfest saw 12 ParaSport Teams in the Adult Wheelchair and Junior Wheelchair brackets. Yet another great Spokane Hoopfest experience with perfect weather and lots of great new competitors.

Another Summer of Track and Field

May through August was a whirlwind of travel and competitions for the ParaSport Spokane Track and Field Athletes.

Collegiate Meets -Througout March / April a number of our adult athletes competed alongside many collegiate programs. We kicked it off at when we headed west to the UPS Ed Boitano Meet at then competed at a series of Whitworth Meets.

Swiss Series and WPA Grand Prix
Phillip Croft, Bob Hunt, Michael Anwar and Lindi Marcusen travelled to compete at the Swiss Grand Prix and Swiss wheelchair racing series.
It was a great kick off to international competition for all of the athletes as they were able to compete against many of the top international athletes in their respective classifications. We truly do appreciate the high caliber meet that the Swiss organizers put on.

June -SFCC Sasquatch All-Comers Meets happen every Wednesday. It was so fun to host our friends from Texas at twilight meets this year!

USATF Association Championships - Spokane, WA
It's always great to compete alongside our fellow local USATF members when we get a chance. The USATF Association Championships, hosted at West Valley HS in Spokane Valley was staged on a very hot and dry Saturday.

ParaSport Spokane Content helps Photographer Win Award

This image, titled "Resilience" has won photographer Rene Guerrero the Innovia Foundation's top photograph award.

Snapped at our inaugural Pine Cone Classic Track and Field Meet, the image contains athletes Lindi Marcusen and Annie Carey. The image was submitted within the People award category, which it won, but also won the Overall Winner. Congrats Rene!

The award comes with a grant to be donated to the winners charity of choice. Rene has graciously shared the grant between ParaSport Spokane and Meals On Wheels.

This is the second time a photo with our member athletes has won this award.

Three ParaSport Spokane athletes kick off competition at the World Para Athletics World Championships in New Delhi India

The World Para Athletics (WPA) World Championships began today in New Delhi, India and run through Oct 5th.
Three current ParaSport Spokane athletes are representing team USA.
▪Bob Hunt (T53 wheelchair racer) In his third world championships will be racing in the 100m and 400m events.
▪Lindi Marcusen (T63 above the knee amputee sprinter and jumper). The 2024 Paralympian is doing the 100m and Long Jump at her first WPA Worlds.
▪Taylor Swanson (T37 athlete with cerebral palsy) The 2x Paris Paralympic Games medalist will look to add to improve on her 2x medal haul from the 2024 WPA world championships in Kobe Japan in the 100m and 200m distances.

Three ParaSport Spokane alumni are also competing:

A massive thanks to everyone who showed up to support our amazing member athletes in their quest to meet their sport and recreation goals.

Over 400 people were in the room.
Almost 500 total participants were bidding on auction items virtually.
We exceeded the amount raised in 2024 and the numbers are still climbing. At the publish of this we are at $189,682 gross from the event! We're trying to Break that $200,000 mark so please send out word to your networks!

Building Community

Seven current and alumni athletes traveled over 155 miles to Toppenish to help an interested athlete find a race chair that fit well for him. Amir is wanting to race on his high school track team. Talk about a motivating group! With three Paralympian wheelchair racers amongst the athletes there to support, Amir had some great roll models to learn from.

As we're looking forward to 2025, we all know that means our annual major fundraiser is quickly approaching.
In 2024 we were able to offer over 275 days of programming!
Our athletes traveled to wheelchair basketball tournaments, track and field meets, swim competitions. We played sled hockey, wheelchair basketball, fenced, swam, ran, jumped, threw and wheeled all around the region.
We can't do it without community help and fundraising!

Say Paralympics.
This is very important. Many Paris Paralympians are busy preparing for their big event which happens 2 weeks following the close of the Olympic games. Most Paralympic athletes cannot compete at the Olympic games, they can't even qualify due to the nature of their disabilities and the fact that the Olympic system is totally separate from the Paralympic Sport system. They do, however work together, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) extending their cooperation agreement through 2032 .
The Paralympic Games were created as a "parallel" to the Olympic Games, but no "O" is needed. We see many using ParaOlympics, which is just wrong.
So, why does it matter? We must embrace the Paralympic movement as a distinct and important entity in the global sporting spectrum. The Paralympic Games are now the second largest sporting event in the world! Many people believe that saying Paralympic implies lesser than the Olympics, but it is not. In fact, for athletes at the Paralympic games, it is the greatest representation of sport relative to their disability on a global scale.
Say Paralympic. You'll sound informed and will immediately gain a greater level of credibility within the ParaSport circles.

3 Athletes to Paris Paralympic Games!

3 ParaSport Spokane athletes have been selected to represent team USA at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games in Para Track and Field.

A team of 10 athletes from ParaSport Spokane descended onto the Team USA Para Track and Field Trials this past weekend at the Ansin Sport Complex in Miramar Florida.

3 athletes performances garnered them a slot to wear the prestigious Red White and Blue in Paris during the Paralympic Games next month (Aug 28-Sept 8th). The Para Track and Field team of 54 athletes is comprised of 28 male and 26 female athletes. All three athletes are competing at their first Paralympic Games.

Lauren Fields -18 -T34 Wheelchair Racer
Fields leveled up her performance at the trials setting two massive personal records in the 100m and 800m to make her first international Para Track and Field team and first Paralympic Games team. Lauren is a recent Valley Christian School Graduate and Spokane Sports Commission Youth Sport Award Nominee, will be heading to the University of Illinois on a wheelchair racing scholarship.

Lindi Marcusen -28 -T63 Sprinter / Jumper
Lindi set her sights on being the first female above the knee sprinter to break 15 seconds at the trials. And she did it! An American Record, a personal record and her ticket punched to her first international Para Track and Field Team and first Paralympic Games. Lindi will also be competing in the Long Jump while in Paris. She’s grateful for the support from Evergreen Prosthetics and Orthotics as well as Ottobock in ensuring that her prosthetic performance needs are met.
100m -1st -14.95 (Lindi also ran a faster 14.87 but the wind reading was too high to be eligible for the record to stand)
Long Jump -2nd -3.89m

Taylor Swanson -31 -T37 Sprinter
After a strong 2 silver medal showing at the World Championships this summer, Swanson is looking to back up this performance in Paris at her first Paralympic Games. Taylor raced to two wins in the 100m and 200m at the trials coming very close to her personal and American records. Taylor is also grateful for the support from Evergreen Prosthetics and Orthotics in ensuring her orthotic needs are met to support her performance goals.

Taylor will be competing against 2x Paralympic Silver Medalist Jaleen Roberts (ParaSport Spokane Alumni now training at the Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Chula Vista)

Community Outreach Bridging the Gap

The majority of ParaSport Spokane athletes are of school age, between 13 -21 years. With members even as young as 2 years old, our programs are invested in supporting not only these athletes, but their families and the greater orbit of influence around them. In doing so we help build awareness, appreciation and respect for each athletes individual situation. We have found no greater way to do so than by bringing in wheelchair basketball chairs and doing a PE take-over at local schools. The Bridging the Gap Program, generously supported by the Northern Quest Casino and the Kalispell Tribe of Indians, helps to transform the conversation surround the athlete of focus. Over the day, the student athlete helps to lead drills, and showcases their proficiency in the wheelchair basketball chair. In the eyes of their peers, they go from being the student with a disability, to a peer with a skill set who is athletic and plays sports.

Success at US Para Track and Field Championships!

Ten ParaSport Spokane athletes competed at Mt Sac’s fantastic Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, CA for the US Paralympic Track and Field Championships this past weekend.

The event not only served as the National Championships, but also as the final qualifier for the 2024 World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe Japan. The Kobe team of 30 was named on Monday March 18th with two ParaSport Spokane athletes qualifying.
Big congrats to Taylor Swanson and Bob Hunt on making the team!

The #redherd showed up ready to compete, earning eight national titles.
Leading the charge off of her double silver medal performance at the Para PanAmerican Games last November was Taylor Swanson. Securing National titles in the T37 100m and 200m for ambulant athletes with neurological impairments, Swanson’s performances ranked her very highly amongst her peers and earned her a coveted spot on the World Championships team. This will be her first time representing team USA at the World Championships. The 31 year old only discovered Para Track and Field two years ago and moved to Spokane last November to pursue her newfound Paralympic dream of competing in the Paris Paralympic Games this coming August.

Wheelchair racer Bob Hunt won the T53 100m race and was 2nd over 400m. His performance qualified him for a relay slot on the World Championships team. This will be the second World Championships for the EWU student, with his first back in 2013.

Lindi Marcusen has raced into the record books becoming the fastest female above the knee amputee (T63) in USA history and in the Americas Region with her 100m national title. She also placed 2nd in the T63 long jump while setting a huge personal best. She is currently in Italy preparing to compete at a World Para Athletics Grand Prix meet in Jesolo.

National Titles were also won on the track by Michael Anwar in the 100m T72 Frame Runner event.
In the throws events, ParaSport Spokane athletes with shot stature Michelle Kazuba threw to two National titles in the F40 shot put and discus throw, while her training partner Ben Foos also secured the national title in the F40 shot put.

Wapato based thrower Alicia Guerrero set a personal record on the discus throw placing 4th in the combined F44/64 event and also placed 3rd in the F44/64 shot put.

A trio of high schoolers also achieve strong results at the national level. Lauren Fields T34 wheelchair racer placed 2nd and 3rd in the 100m and 800m respectively. Kady Hammer of Winthrop had two second place runs in the T13 100 & 200m. Alaina Gott of Airway Heights raced to a second place finish in the T13 400m and two third place finishes in the 100 & 200m. Both Hammer and Gott are athletes with visual impairments.

Over 300 attendees showed their appreciation for our athletes, for good food, for great cider, beer and wine and some great deserts!

Santiago Parapan American Games!

Spokane athletes have seen great success at the 2023 Parapan American Games in Santiago Chile over the past 5 days. As they return home, two other athletes are heading to Thailand for the World Ability Sport Games!

The three current ParaSport Spokane and two alumni athletes collected 12 medals in the Para Track and Field competition Santiago.

A rather unbelievable statistic -if Spokane was a nation competing at the games they would have been ranked 9th in Gold medals (3) and tied Canada for 10th in total medals with 12.

This was Alicia’s first Parapan Games and international competition. She has previously attended the University of Illinois as a wheelchair basketball player and is now living back in Wapato in preparations for the Paris Paralympics in 2024

The 20 year old from Wapato threw the discus in the F64 (F= Field, 64=disability classification) classification.

Santiago was Hunt’s second Parapan Games The 33 year old EWU student raced the 100m and 400m T53 Wheelchair races. Aside from wheelchair racing, Bob is also a EWU wheelchair basketball player, a junior wheelchair racing coach and the coach of the ParaSport Spokane Junior Varsity wheelchair basketball team.

Taylor Swanson -Spokane, WA -T37 Sprinter with Cerebral Palsy
Swanson, 31, just recently moved to Spokane from Seattle to train with ParaSport Spokane, she only discovered Para Track and Field last summer and has quickly rose to international prominence. This was her first Parapan Games and international games.

Oh what fun at the Joya Fun run and community fair! We just love this awesome program that many of our members have benefited from.

IWAS Fundraiser

We are working to help our six athletes to offset these fees.
Thus, we are working to engage our community in garnering $25,000 to support.

6 Athletes Named to IWAS World Games Team!

MOVE UNITED named it's 30 athlete squad for the 2022 IWAS World Games team on August 26. Included are a number of our own ParaSport Spokane athletes and staff.

Congrats to Michael Anwar, Lauren Fields, Elizabeth Floch, Ben Foos, Lindi Marcusen and Chance Wells on being named to the team!

The IWAS World Games begin on November 25th. Track and field competition kicks off on November 26th through 28th. The International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) is a seventy year old organization and founding member of the International Paralympic Committee. The IWAS World Games are designed to give aspiring Paralympians and emerging athletes their first taste of international competition.

This event is a "self-funded" athlete event, we're raising $25,000 in funds to offset these costs for the athletes to attend. To donate click here and be sure to note IWAS in the notes section.

US Para Fencing Camp
Jackson Atwood and coach Payton Walling we're ParaSport Spokane's first fencing athletes to attend a US Parafencing event at the USOPC Training Center in Colorado Springs! Find out more about our fencing program by clicking this link .

US Para Track & Field Nationals
Five athletes traveled to Miramar, FL for the US Para T&F Nationals. In the hot windy and humid Florida weather, ParaSport Spokane athletes come away with a number of PR's.

Hoopfest!
We had a great turnout at our Hoopfest camp and we had a record number of athletes play at Hoopfest in 2022. 46 ParaSport Spokane athletes participated in the Junior and Open Wheelchair Divisions. Our youngest athlete was 2 years old!

SFCC/Cheney High School Twilight Series
Many athletes competed at the SFCC Bigfoot and Cheney High School Twilight Series of meets. As our senior athletes were rounding out their season, our junior aged athletes we're busy preparing to head off to Move United Junior Nationals in Denver!

Move United Junior Nationals
A team of 11 athletes made the trek to Denver and the Move United Junior Nationals. Our first swimmer, Alex raced to a number of great PR times in the pool! On field day, many PR's and National Age Group records were set. On the track the athletes competed fiercely and showed great sportsmanship! Nice work everyone!

Stash Dash!
We also had a great contingent of athletes race at the Stash Dash which was put on by Elevations! One of our favorite local charities that provide needed rehabilitation and mobility related equipment for youth with a disability in the region. In collaboration with Sunrise Medical and Southridge High School in Kennewick, ParaSport Spokane has created Hoops Unite!

Wheelchair Basketball teams from Seattle Adaptive Sports, Adaptive Sports Northwest, Team St. Luke's, Eastern Washington University and ParaSport Spokane will descend on Kennewick on March 5th.

We are so super pumped to be putting on our auction fundraiser once again!

This year we will be utilizing a hybrid (online and in-person) format.

Here is how it will work:
All bidding will be done via phone / device.

• Our auction catalog will be posted online for viewing.
• On the night of the event (February 5th) bidding will continue online. Volunteers will be available at kiosks to assist with online bidding.
• There will be some exclusive items available for purchase only at the in-person event!
• Items will be available for pick-up after bidding is closed at the in-person event or later that week at ParaSport Spokane Headquarters (More details to come.)

Online Bidding: All bidders will register online! Bidding can take place between January 27th and February 5th from the comfort of your own home, on-the-go or at the in-person event.

Live Event: Tickets to the in-person event can be purchased on our website! The purchase of a ticket to the event includes a gourmet catered meal, beverages, access to exclusive items only available at the in-person event and an evening to remember! Tokyo 2020 was a truly formative experience for Hannah Dederick and Jaleen Roberts, the two ParaSport Spokane athletes competing at the games. The games saw unprecedented media coverage, including right here in the USA with NBC even adding another 17 extra hours of coverage over the course of the event.

Tokyo Bound!

Two current, and three ParaSport Spokane alumni are heading to the Tokyo Paralympic Games!

Jaleen Roberts -T37, Long Jump, 100m, 200m. Roberts has been training with ParaSport Spokane under coach David Greig since 2017. Is an EWU Education student pursuing a career in teaching. She is currently the #1 ranked female long jumper in her classification in the world this year. Is also ranked 3rd in the 100m and 200m. A 5x world championship medallist, his is Jaleen’s first Paralympic Games Team.

Hannah Dederick -T54, 100m, 400m. Has trained with ParaSport Spokane wheelchair racing coach Teresa Skinner since 2016. Dederick is currently the #2 ranked female wheelchair racer in the 100m in the world this year and #4 in the 400m. She is a recent graduate of Central Valley High School. Hannah is attending the University of Illinois in the fall. A multiple world junior champion, this will be Hannah’s first Paralympic Games team.

We are super stoked to be in Minneapolis with 11 athletes competing at the US Paralympic Team Track and Field Trials!

Out of respect for our member athletes and volunteer coaches and in compliance with the WA State school closures we will be suspending all indoor large group training until April 24th. This includes wheelchair basketball, strength & conditioning, GO BABY GO, Sports Nutrition and Women's group.
Sports Nutrition and Women's Group will utilize the ZOOM platform to continue interaction and support.
We will reassess this policy as things develop.

Supporting event - May 4th -Bloomsday Prolog / 50m Future Bloomies Fun Run

What is a Prolog? The prolog is a 1km time trial that helps to determine the starting grid for the elite wheelchair racers. It is also a great community event where athletes of all ages can interact with the elite field and get to know the competitors. Many "Future Bloomies" who aren't quite up for the full course will race the Prolog.

What is the 50m Future Bloomies Fun Run?
It is an awesome, FREE experience for those who are super excited to do a mini-race.
It is a 50m race for fun -no racing chair required, no previous training or experience required, just bring those smiles! All participants get a ribbon for finishing the race.

The event takes place on the Centennial Trail just east of the Don Kardong Bridge (West of Cincinnati St. between the GU Law School and the Martin Center on GU Campus -see map below). For the exact location of the Prolog & Future Bloomies 50m Race's - click here

Seattle Slam 2018!

Another great tournament for the PSS Crew at the Seattle Slam!
The DIII and Women's teams teams both had great games with lots of learning going on.
This tournament also served as the first travel tournaments for Michael P and Grant. So fun to watch this team grow and continue to evolve.

#GivingTuesday Full Court Press to the 2019 NWBA National Championships

As part of the #GivingTuesday Movement on November 27th. ParaSport Spokane is launching our "Full Court Press to the 2019 NWBA National Championships!" Fundraising Campaign.

On November 27th, every dollar raised for charities via the Facebook Fundraising portal will be matched by Facebook and PayPal up to the value of $7 Million.

With a goal of $8,000, this fundraising campaign has dual goals:
-To build awareness about the mission and values of ParaSport Spokane
-To offset the cost for the Women's and Junior wheelchair basketball teams to compete at the 2019 NWBA National Championships in New Lennox, IL.

Funds raised will offset travel, accommodation and tournament fees and help to meet the goal of ParaSport Spokane in reducing costs to athletes and their families to as little as possible.

The fundraising drive will not only take place on Nov 27th, but will continue through the new year until February 22nd.

There is considerable cost to operate this program, which is run by a 100% volunteer group of staff. Volunteers gave over 5000 hours to this program in 2018 coordinating programs up to six days a week at times. The impact that this program has on its member athletes is profound and lasts a lifetime. Any and all donations are appreciated, even the smallest contribution makes great impact.

The Bridge City Classic Tournament in Portland!

Amputee Run & Throw Clinic Featuring Nick Rogers!

Clinic #1 of the ParaSport Spokane Track & Field Series will Feature 2016 Paralympian and 2017 World Championships Bronze Medalist, Nick Rogers!

We are very excited to host Nick and have him share his knowledge and story with clinic participants.

Also joining Nick and ParaSport Spokane Coaches is Prosthetist Francois Van Der Watt of Van Der Watt Prosthetics & Orthotics in Greenwood Arkansas. Francois has served as National Team Prosthetist at a number of US Paralympic Track and Field Team events including the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships and the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.

Clinic participants will learn techniques for running & throwing, will gain valuable feedback from clinic staff, and learn much much more about participation in track and field locally, at the WIAA level and within the US Paralympic Track and Field System.

The clinic is open to anyone, of any age and ability, no specialized prosthetics are needed. Individuals who are amputees, have a limb difference or limited range of motion within a limb are all invited to attend. Also invited are track and field coaches, educators and those from the medical profession that service individuals with physical disabilities.

Arizona Disabled Sports once again hosted the Desert Challenge Games at Joe Selleh Track on the Arizona State University Campus in Mesa, AZ. An event that typically occurs in early May, this years meet promised to be much hotter than usual, with training days leading up the event reaching over 110! Come competition days, the weather stayed in the 90's and our 13 athletes from ParaSport Spokane joined over 400 of their colleagues from around the globe to run, jump and throw.

Another Bloomsday has come and gone. We are yet again reminded of how special an event this 12km race is to the community of Spokane. For ParaSport Spokane, our athletes and staff, we see it as a great opportunity to build awareness, educate, and establish a greater connection with the community at large.

In 2017, the Saturday morning Prolog (typically used as a time trial to determine the elite wheelchair start grid) included a large number of Junior Bloomies (athletes who aspire to one day race the challenging Bloomsday course) and a short fun run for the Future Bloomies (new, young and excited athletes!). We continued this tradition in 2018 and has some inspired racing from athletes of all ages.

2018 had some great results on the full course! We were super excited to have Paralympic Superstars Tatyana McFadden and Chelsea McClammer present the ribbons to our Junior & Future Bloomies. What a great way to ignite the dreams of the young racers!

The staff and membership at ParaSport Spokane are in the thick of the wheelchair basketball season. With 3 tournaments contested already, we are preparing for the next three months of tournaments including the potential to travel with teams to two national championships.

The largest determining factor in if we travel is financial. To travel to nationals requires flights, hotel, the cost of food, and on-site transportation. Hence our second annual Pairing with ParaSport, Great Wine for a Great Cause!

A great cause indeed (although we are a bit biased), check out each of these smiling faces that every penny goes to support...

...funds raised help offset not only competitive costs, but also cover expenses for equipment repair (wheelchair wheels, spokes, tires, gloves, basketballs, throwing implements, tape, medical supplies), and help us offset costs for our facility rental fees.

ParaSport Spokane athletes compete recreationally, locally, with their schools, at state meets, nationally, and even internationally!

In 2017, thanks to funds raised at our Inaugural Pairing with ParaSport Auction, we were able to provide weekly programs for 11 months of the year, we were able to send teams to compete in Louisville at wheelchair basketball nationals, have athletes compete in track meets in Seattle, and at the world championship trials at UCLA!

2017 U.S. Paralympics Track & Field Championships!

Nine ParaSport Spokane athletes are headed to Los Angeles to compete at UCLA’s Drake Stadium at the 2017 U.S. Paralympic Track & Field Championships. This event is not just the National Championship, but also serves as the selection trials for two international teams. The 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London England , and the World Para Athletics Junior Championships in Notwil Switzerland

The squad is a unique blend of rookies and veterans. With 2016 Paralympic Gold Medallist and World Record Holder Rachael Morrison leading the charge coming off a strong Club Throw performance and world leading distance at the Desert Challenge Grand Prix last month.

Fresh off of the WIAA State meet, Isaiah Rigo and Spencer Kimbro have also earned their international starts with Rigo attending the 2013 & 2015 World Championships in Lyon and Doha respectively and Kimbro joining the team at the 2015 World’s in Doha.

Newcomer sensation Jaleen Roberts is also looking to make her first World’s team and has ran one of the fastest 200m times in the world this year.

Phillip Croft, coming off his first Grand Prix event win in the 1500m in Arizona this past month is looking to make the next step up the international competitive rung and gain some valuable competitive experience at this his first U.S. Paralympic National Championships.

Also experiencing their first Nationals this year are Elizabeth Floch, Hannah Dederick, Jackson Atwood and Sophie Munter. In a year of firsts, this young crew also tackled Bloomsday and competed at the Desert Challenge Grand Prix last month.

The majority of the team departs Thursday Morning from the Spokane Airport and returns late Sunday night.
Competition begins Friday and continues through Sunday morning.
The World Para Athletics Team will be Finalized by June 7, 2017
The World Para Athletics Junior Team will be finalized by 12 June, 2017
